Why Flight Malfunctions are Common in Air India?

 Introduction

Already resource-strained Air India finds it difficult to meet the roster requirements due to higher operational costs and ill-formed operational rosters. Adding fuel to the fire, its flights run into glitches quite often due to poor maintenance, frequent changes in service vendors, and employment of an inexperienced workforce, raising flight safety concerns among its loyal customers.

Flight Safety Issues

Air India has frequently been found caught in some of the worst air accidents in the history of the country's aviation history. Many causes have been attributed to it. Some of them are due to systemic failure, while some others are due to human errors. Despite giving training, the human errors keep on propping up due to the insufficient rest periods for aircraft pilots between changing rosters.

Causes of Safety Issues

The handing over of loss-making Air India to Tata Sons has not made any significant difference in its service to the aviation market. This is because Tata Sons has inherited a resource-strained aviation company that was grappling with several issues.

  1. 1. Aging Fleet: The aviation company’s transition involved heavy financial losses and logistical strains due to the non-availability of a sufficient number of operational aircraft. This is where the maintenance and modernization of aging aircraft comes in. However, this adds to an already higher operational cost.
  2. 2.   Unscientific Rosters: The management needs to keep in mind the resting time of pilots. Currently, pilots do not get sufficient resting time between rosters.
  3. 3. Recurring Technical Defects: The company needs to file the regulatory data with Parliament. So, it needed to document a large volume of repeated technical issues across a significant number of the fleet.
  4. 4. Recent Mid-air Incidents: Sudden altitude-loss events and weather or technical scares have magnified safety concerns among passengers and regulators. This has led to mass cancellation of air tickets.
  5. 5. Massive financial losses: The airline group continues to post huge losses as it attempts large-scale restructuring and reviving old aircraft through their modernization and maintenance.
  6. 6. Flight disruptions: Hundreds of monthly flight cancellations and delays strain customer service, ticketing counters, and communication channels. This occurs mainly due to lack of availability of fully operational aircraft on important routes.
  7. 7. Management shifts: The airline has experienced frequent leadership changes due to one reason or another. Much of the work has been outsourced to third-party agencies. This heavy reliance on outside aviation expertise has resulted in delayed turnaround targets.
