How UPI Aided Financial Inclusion
Introduction
Some years back a new system was introduced to make financial transactions easy and secured. At that time, many people were cynical about its value. Some politicians even said that the efforts for such a transformation were a futile exercise. The system we are referring to is Unified Payment Interface (UPI). The new financial system, as we know, is a tremendous success. Nowadays, even roadside vendors are using it. No need to carry a huge amount of money.
Characteristics of UPI
Before it was released, a great deal of work, years of planning, hardware acquisition, and extensive testing were done. It is a common gateway for conducting various financial transactions, as the name suggests. It offers services like fund transfers, withdrawals, deposits, and more while bringing together transactions with various banks under one roof. The following lists the key characteristics of the UPI payment system.
- 24-hour Availability: UPI services are accessible at all times. As long as there is an internet connection, the user can access the app from any location.
- Single App: A single app can be used to access a variety of functions, from simple withdrawals and deposits to money transfers. Installing this app on a mobile device allows for convenient access from any location.
- Interoperability: Any bank the user chooses can be connected to this app. The individual can connect to the bank and take advantage of its services.
- Instant Transfer: The app instantly transfers funds between accounts. The money transfer may also be made from one bank to another. Either National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), or Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is used to transfer the funds.
- Virtual Payment Address: Using a distinct UPI ID or mobile number, the customer can easily and safely make payments. The ten-digit account number is not something he needs to recall. These processes can be carried out safely without disclosing the PIN or account number.
- Push and Pull: Use the app to safely add money to or take money out of your account. This is easily transferable from one bank account to another.
- Single Mobile Application: A single mobile application can carry out a number of bank-related tasks.
- 2-factor authentication: Each transaction can be approved by the customer using a unique 4- or 10-digit number. Biometric systems can also be used to accomplish this.
Inclusivity in Finance
By facilitating inexpensive financial transactions in their daily lives, UPI has helped close the gap between the rich and the poor. You might be shocked to learn that this system enables 50 million and 300 million people to conduct digital banking transactions. Millions of zero balance accounts were created and connected to the UPI payment system with the introduction of the Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana. For simple authentication and verification, these accounts were connected to Adhaar. This made it possible for regular people to conduct quick financial transactions. Everyone has a UPI card for easy transactions, including farmers, street vendors, and large corporations. Additionally, they have a Point of Sale (POS) that links QR codes for simple payment. As a result, our nation is now cashless thanks to the pan-Indian digital network, which enables people from all walks of life to manage money online.
